Software I use
Last updated April 17 2025
I’ve recently done a clean-up of licenses that I have, and thought about what software I use. Here’s what I’m currently using and am subscribed to (and thereby support):
App | Description | Usage/comment |
---|---|---|
Productivity | ||
Firefox and DuckDuckGo | Web browsing and search | Currently evaluating Kagi (subscription based search) as a replacement for DuckDuckGo. |
Obsidian | Notes | Local and markdown based. Their Sync service works really well across devices. Moved away from Notion for this. |
Remarkable | Notes | Used with my Remarkable, which is mostly for quick capture and thinking. I send my notes to myself by email, or gather them from the app, and dump them into Obisidan |
Todoist | Todo application | Fantastic application: Easy to use, highly customizeable and cheap. Long term user. |
1Password | Password management | Moved to 1Pass from Lastpass a few years ago. Usable, everything I could ask for in a password manager. |
ChatGPT | AI assistant / text generation | Mostly used to improve/save time on work email. |
Notion | Notes | Mostly used with my wife for collaborative notes about the home and such. A lot of kanban boards. We also use it at work. |
Proton Mail, Drive, VPN and SimpleLogin | E-mail, storage, VPN, email alias | Recently bought 2 years of Proton Duo (with my wife) to handle mail with a custom domain, and get some long-term storage. In addition, it feels good to support a privacy oriented ethos. Some limitations in usability but it works well enough. Great value. |
Google Drive and Photos | Storage and photos | Because of interoperability I use Google for everyday storage and collaboration, both privately and at work. It works well enough, but I’m trying to move to alternatives. The user experience of Google Photos in particular is fantastic, so it’s been hard to find good alternatives that are credible and value privacy. I am currently evaluating Ente. |
Content | ||
Readwise Reader | RSS reader and read it later-app | In addition to being my RSS reader (replacing Feedly) and read it later app (replacing Pocket) Also used for gathering quotes from various sources, and syncing those into Obsidian |
PocketCast | Podcast client | Long term user, fantastic product. Got in early, so I got a lifetime subscription which is great value. |
Snipcast | AI summary of podcasts | A colleague of mine made it, and it works really well. I provide it a podcast link, it summarizes it. A email filter forwards the summary into Readwise Reader. |
Storygraph | Book tracking | Track what I’m reading, and share with the few that also has a Storygraph account. I’ve subscribed to get even better stats.I’m still on Goodreads as many of my friends are there. I add books there about once a month. |
Last.fm | Music tracking | Track what I’m listening to across services, just for fun and stats. |
Discogs | Music tracking | Tracks my collection of vinyl and CDs, and lets me scrobble to last.fm |
Communication | ||
Signal | Messaging app | Great app, works well across devices. My goal is to only use this and SMS.Sadly, there still are social situations that makes Facebook Messenger (and Facebook) necessary. |
Lifestyle | ||
Headspace | Meditation app | I bought a lifetime subscription over 10 years back, which I still use regularly. |
Hevy | Workout tracking | Used for tracking weight lifting workouts. I’ve been through a few apps, this covers most of my bases. Only thing missing now is automated weight increased based on a set program, but it seems like they are continuously developing it. Lifetime subscription. |
